What Happens on Republic Day in Marmaris, Turkey?
Republic Day in Marmaris. In anticipation of the Republic Day of Turkey (Cumhuriyet Bayramı in Turkish) celebrated on October 29th Marmaris Governorship has ordered the following and provided instructions to the public celebrations and the street parade in Marmaris.
The celebrations in Marmaris will begin on the 28th of October with the officials in laying wreaths ot the Statue of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in Marmaris center.
On the 28th – 29th of October Turkish flags are flying on every building, window and balcony in Marmaris, Icmeler, and other towns in Turkey to commemorate the Republic Day. Hotel buildings in Marmaris and Icmeler display very large Turkish flags on top of the buildings. Marmaris streets and the central Ataturk Boulevard are adorned with Turkish flags and Ataturk’s portraits on Republic Day.
The streets around the local stadium in Marmaris, namely Sariana Mahallesi 5, 12, 14 and 15 streets will be closed to traffic and car parking from October 28th from 20:00 until October 29, until further notice.
The local stadium in Marmaris in the morning on October 29 will host performances dedicated to Republic Day in Turkey. Such performances usually consist of theater sketches, poetry readings and traditional Turkish dances. Many school children participate in school performances for parents and teachers.
On October 29 the Turkish Coast Guard Ship TCG Gaziantep (F-490) will be open to visitors on October 29th 2024 to commemorate the Republic Day of Turkey. The visiting hours are from 10:00 – 12:00 and 14:00 – 17:00 on Marmaris Municipality harbour from Aquarium Pier.
Later in the evening on October 29 the Torchlight Procession and 101 Dancers who will be dancing the ‘Zeybek’ folk dance will culminate on Marmaris central Ataturk Boulevard from the hotel Ketenci down to the Statue of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk starting at 20:30.
A free public concert of Fuat Saka will be held on Ataturk Square tonight at 21:00 to commemorate the Republic Day of Turkey.
Due to these events the road leading all the way from the central fountain square in Marmaris to the hotel Ketenci will be closed to traffic and parking from 13:00 hrs on October 29. Please follow the signs and police instructions. Cars that are left unattended will be removed by traffic police.
Republic Day is an official national holiday in Turkey. Public administration buildings, schools, post offices and many small businesses are usually closed on this day. Public transport schedules may vary. Public transport routes may change in the event of street performances and processions. The afternoon of the previous day, October 28, is also an official holiday.
Republic Day marks the creation of the Turkish Republic in 1923. After Turkey’s victory in the War of Independence (1919-1923), the Turkish parliament proclaimed the new Turkish state as a republic. A new constitution, which the parliament adopted on October 29, 1923, replaced the constitution of the Ottoman Empire. The leader in the Turkish War of Independence, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, became the country’s first president on the same day. According to Atatürk, Republic Day is Turkey’s most important holiday.
