What happens to the street animals in Marmaris after the tourists are gone? Marmaris is famous for its street animals—especially its cats. They are pampered by both the staff and visitors at the local restaurants and hotels throughout the season. But like all good things this comes to an end in November when the majority of the local hotels and restaurants shut down. The street animals are back to the harsh reality looking for food and clean water. When tourists disappear for the winter, local people feed and care for street cats and dogs, relying on their own income.
An unexpected outcome of the forest fires in the recent years around Marmaris people observed wild animals roaming the streets and the beach, like wild boars and donkeys. Each year more of wild boars are observed taking to the streets of Marmaris, Bodrum, Kusadasi and Fethiye in search of food. People respond either in shock or awe. Luckily these wild boars do not really live up to the reputation of being dangerous. According to the wildlife expert Nicky Featherstone: “As habitat loss pushes wild boars closer and closer to urban areas, encounters with humans are likely to continue increasing. So, if you ever see a wild boar, it’s important to remain calm and remember that, though the creature has the ability to hurt or even kill you, it is unlikely to do so.” The wild boars in Marmaris are unlikely to be leaving the town so we might as well try to learn how to live with them around.
