What Happens on Victory Day in Marmaris, Turkey?
We are celebrating the 30th of August the Victory Day in Marmaris (Zafer Bayramı) also known as the Turkish Armed Forces Day. It is a public holiday all over the country. The heart of celebrations is in Anıtkabir in Ankara where the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan leads officials in laying wreaths and then delivers a speech.
The Victory Day in Turkey receives the nationwide and worldwide attention and participation. Victory Day commemorates the victory in the Battle of Dumlupınar which was the decisive battle in the Turkish War of Independence in 1922. On the 30th of August Turkish flags are flying on every building, window and balcony in Marmaris to commemorate the Victory Day. Hotel buildings in Marmaris and Icmeler display very large Turkish flags on top of the buildings. Marmaris streets and the central Ataturk Boulevard are adorned with Turkish flags and Ataturk’s portraits on Victory Day.
Later today the Torchlight Procession will culminate on the central Ataturk Boulevard at 21:00 to commemorate the Victory Day.
A free public concert of Aydilge will be held on Ataturk Square tonight at 21:30 to commemorate the Victory Day.
Turkish Coast Guard Ship will be open to visitors today to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Victory Day. The visiting hours are from 09:00 – 18:00 on Marmaris Municipality harbour.
TCG Atak P337 Assault Boat will be open to visitors today to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Victory Day. The visiting hours are from 09:30 – 11:00 & 13:30 – 15:00, visitors picked up at the Ataturk Square on the harbour to be transferred to the boat.
