Celebrate Kurban Bayram in Marmaris Turkey
This year the entire Muslim world will celebrate Kurban Bayramı from the 20th July until the 24th July 2021 which is why Marmaris and other resorts in Turkey are overflown with visitors and holidaymakers.
It does not have a fixed date in the calendar and falls on different days each year.
Kurban Bayramı has a number of traditions with the main one being a sacrifice. It is the festival of sacrifice where people sacrifice an animal to commemorate the Islamic prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. Animals such as cows, goats and sheep are sacrificed. Once sacrificed, the meat is shared out, part of the meat is given to the poor, while other part is kept for the family, friends and neighbours.
This time in Turkey can be compared to any religious holidays in the world and in Europe. People are dressed up and visit each other to exchange festival greetings, drink Turkish coffee and eat desserts. Kids run around to collect sweets, chocolate and money that are willingly shared by the people in Turkey. New brides receive significant presents including money and golden jewellery from the in-laws and husbands. If you are in Marmaris, you will definitely witness this first hand and experience the good ambience of the community here.
